Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure used to renew the overall tone and texture of the skin.

It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes, acne scars, melasma and other skin related conditions. In the procedure, a special applicator with an abrasive surface is used to gently sand the outer layer of the skin and thus rejuvenate it.

Another different microdermabrasion technique sprays fine particles of aluminum oxide or baking soda to achieve the same result as using the abrasive surface.

Read on to find out more about this innovative skin rejuvenation procedure.

What is microdermabrasion?

The epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, protects the body from the aggressions of the outside world, such as moisture, heat, excess light or pollution debris.

To maintain healthy and youthful skin for longer, it is important that you regularly exfoliate to remove excess dead cells, allowing and enhancing the birth of a new layer of skin.

Microdermabrasion is the right technique to achieve healthier, more beautiful and youthful skin.

It is a non-invasive aesthetic treatment, which, through a device with diamond tips, releases fine crystals of aluminum oxide. These aluminum oxide crystals, expelled in a jet, have a slightly abrasive action but effectively exfoliate the skin.

After this exfoliation, the residues left by the aluminum oxide crystals are vacuum aspirated and a mask suitable for the skin type and the problem to be treated is applied, it is: wrinkles, acne, sagging or skin aging.

By the action of exfoliation and vacuum, blood flow is stimulated, promoting collagen and elastin production and skin renewal.

Who Can Do Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is considered a safe procedure for most skin types and colors and leaves skin smooth and glowing like no other treatment can.

Through gentle abrasion and suction, microdermabrasion removes dead cells, which allows effective hydration in the deepest layers of the skin and the appearance of new cells, automatically improving the appearance and elasticity of the skin.

Microdermabrasion is indicated to:

  • Improve rough skin
  • Prevent skin aging
  • Soften pigment spots (dyschromia)
  • Treating inflammation of the hair follicle (folliculitis)
  • Treat thickening of the horny layer of the skin (keratosis)

Despite the versatility and many benefits of microdermabrasion, this treatment is not indicated in cases of:

  • Grade I and II acne
  • After sun exposure
  • Skin cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Immunodeficiency Diseases
  • Eczema and psoriasis

How does microdermabrasion work?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that usually takes about an hour.

Typically, this non-invasive procedure is performed by a trained professional, who may or may not be under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

It is not necessary to use anesthesia or an anesthetic agent for this treatment.

In the treatment, a handheld device will then be used to gently spray the particles or sand down the outer layer of skin on the target areas. At the end, a moisturizing cream and sunscreen will be applied to your skin.

There are a few different ways to perform this procedure, based on the specific device used:

1. Diamond tipped piece
A diamond-tipped handpiece designed to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. At the same time, suck them up.

The depth of the abrasion can be affected by the pressure applied to the handpiece, as well as how long the suction can remain on the skin. This type of microdermabrasion applicator is generally used on more sensitive facial areas, such as near the eyes.

2. Crystal Microdermabrasion
Crystal microdermabrasion uses a crystal-emitting piece to gently spray with fine crystals and remove the outer layers of skin. Like the diamond-tipped piece, dead skin cells are sucked away immediately.

The different types of crystals that can be used include aluminum oxide and baking soda.

3. Hydradermabrasion
Hydradermabrasion is a newer method. It involves the simultaneous combination of crystal-free exfoliation and product infusion into the skin.

It is a procedure that you can do yourself at home too, the Microdermabrasion Rejuvenation Kit gives you the option of taking care of your face at home and using safe devices, it removes, resets and refines your skin for a completely rejuvenated complexion with a more youthful radiant glow. And it's suitable for all skin types.

The process is said to stimulate collagen production and maximize blood flow to the skin.

What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?

Especially suitable for treating the skin, there are many benefits of microdermabrasion which, due to its gentle but effective action, attenuates surface irregularities of the skin, removes scars, blemishes, acne and wrinkles. Result: smoother, healthier and younger looking skin.

Take note of the benefits of microdermabrasion:

Activates microcirculation
Combat sagging
Stimulates the production of collagen (responsible for the structure, firmness and elasticity of the skin)
Stimulates elastin production (responsible for skin resistance and elasticity)
Stimulates the production of reticulin (fibers that connect tissues together)
Improves skin quality
Prevents skin aging
Promotes blood flow
regenerates the cells
Tones and strengthens the skin

What are the results of microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a very versatile treatment that, as it allows you to adjust the intensity of the exfoliation, is suitable for any type of skin (as long as it does not fit the list above).

After a microdermabrasion session, which can last between 30 to 45 minutes, the results are immediately noticeable: brighter, cleaner, healthier and fresher skin.

Although it is most common on the face, microdermabrasion can also be performed on the arms, hands, chest or neck.

Although the results are visible in the first session, depending on the damage and the desired effect, several sessions may be necessary to obtain a skin free of blemishes, acne, wrinkles or other imperfections.

If it is necessary to work only on the most superficial layers of the epidermis, such as the stratum corneum, the treatment can be repeated every one or two weeks. However, if it reaches the deeper layers of the epidermis, such as the basal layer, it will only be possible to perform one microdermabrasion session each month.

As in any aesthetic procedure, since the body is always exposed to various aggressions, after the first treatment, it is recommended that sporadic maintenance sessions be carried out to firm up the results or treat any problems that arise during this time.

It is important to warn that it is natural that, after each session, the skin becomes a little red during the first hours.

What are the side effects of microdermabrasion?

Common side effects of microdermabrasion include:

Mild sensitivity
Swelling
Redness

What is the price of a microdermabrasion session?
The price of a microdermabrasion session varies according to the area to be treated, the severity of the problem, as well as the schedule of the professional chosen for this purpose.

Thus, the price of a microdermabrasion session is about $160 dolars

In order to obtain the desired results, more than one session will be necessary from the outset. Depending on the area to be treated and the severity of the problem, between 3 and 10 sessions may be needed.

If you choose to do this treatment at home with the Snowyskin’s Microdermabrasion device, you can check the price and do as many times you want yourself.
